About H. Upmann Factory

The H. Upmann Factory, also known as the José Martí factory to avoid confusion, is one of Havana's largest and most important cigar production facilities. Originally established by German banker Herman Upmann, the factory produces several of Cuba's most popular brands including the eponymous H. Upmann and the world-famous Montecristo.

History

German banker Herman Upmann established his factory in 1844, creating one of Havana's first purpose-built cigar manufacturing facilities.

In 1935, Alonso Menéndez acquired the factory and created the Montecristo brand within its walls, which would become the world's best-selling Cuban cigar.

The factory has been modernised several times while maintaining traditional hand-rolling techniques that date back over 175 years.

Today it is one of Havana's most productive factories, with hundreds of skilled torcedores producing millions of cigars annually.
